Salt & Straw ice cream continues to put down Bay Area roots with the opening of its first Silicon Valley scoop shop in the Palo Alto community. Known for its taste-provoking flavors, the small-batch, family-run company offers a distinct and one-of-a-kind ice cream experience that surprises, delights and brings guests together. “At Salt & Straw, we find so much inspiration from our communities, so we’re thrilled to be opening in Palo Alto, an epicenter for creativity and innovation,” said Kim Malek, who co-founded Salt & Straw with cousin and head ice cream maker Tyler Malek in 2011 in Portland, Oregon. “We can’t wait to be part of the fabric of Palo Alto and connect with such a thriving and vibrant neighborhood.” The Palo Alto scoop shop will showcase Tyler’s Bay Area-specific flavors that tell a story about beloved local artisans and products. Offerings include Freckled Mint TCHO-colate Chip made with TCHO chocolate produced nearby in Berkeley, and Mt. Tam Cheese with Toasted Acme Bread from the Ferry Building bakery, as well as Salt & Straw classics such as Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons and Salted, Malted, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. All are handmade in small batches using organic, sustainable and thoughtfully-sourced ingredients such as cream from Scott Brothers Dairy, a family-owned California farm. As part of Salt & Straw's commitment to offering guests an array of vegan options, 20% of the menu at the Palo Alto location showcases dairy free flavors. In addition to the core line-up of signature flavors that showcase Tyler’s passion for working with local products and fellow artisans, a curated menu of themed specials rotate monthly. Upon opening and through the month of December, Salt & Straw features a “Holiday on Ice Cream” series with flavors that capture the spirit of the season, including Peppermint Bark Cocoa, Apple Brandy & Pecan Pie, Gingerbread Cookie Dough, Cinnamon Coconut Eggnog and Sugar Plum Fairy. Designed in collaboration with Andee Hess of Portland-based Osmose Design, the Salt & Straw Palo Alto scoop shop spotlights custom design details that recall a modern-day mercantile, offering a welcoming and playful setting to gather for hand-crafted scoops. Salt & Straw has become a West Coast favorite, with scoop shops in Portland, Los Angeles, Downtown Disney, San Diego, the Bay Area, Seattle, in addition to its soft-serve dessert bar, Wiz Bang Bar, in Portland. The Palo Alto shop joins Salt & Straw’s existing Bay Area shops on Fillmore Street and in Hayes Valley in San Francisco proper, along with a newly-opened location in Burlingame. Outside their scoop shops, Salt & Straw is dedicated to supporting local schools and raising awareness for issues such as childhood hunger and equal rights. Grand Opening, doors open at 11am. December flavor series available at all Bay Area scoop shops, including Palo Alto. A portion of proceeds from all the Salt & Straw stores on the 23rd will be donated to the CA Community Foundation Wildfire Relief fund.
